Mother’s Day Special

Mother’s Day is almost here. All around us, shops, social media, TV and radio are gearing up to once again sing praises of mothers the world over. To remind us of their innumerable sacrifices, their unfailing love and devotion and how they deserve to be celebrated.

One of my favourite comic strip characters, Lucy from Peanuts (one of the Charlie Brown gang!), after a row with her mother; has the last word by yelling “I didn’t ask to be born!!”

I quite see her point! We have children to fulfill our own needs, obligations and whatever expectations society and family have of us. And then we want them to celebrate our presence in their lives, apart from the love, respect and obedience we expect as our due from them, anyway.
C’mon, kids- It’s Not Fair!!

So, on the occasion of Mother’s Day, I would like to thank my kids for making me a Mother and for all the things that I’ve learned after becoming one.

Here goes-
I owe you big time for the experience of pure, unconditional love. And for how it has enriched my life. My whole life changed the moment I held you in my arms and realised- this tiny human is mine!

Thanks for teaching me all about patience, tolerance and endurance. Three qualities that have also helped immensely me in my work. Although, you probably think I’m running low on the first two now!

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to grow with you and because of you, to relive my childhood and youth through you. And to see how much you are like me and how much you’re not!
Someone said that ‘Spending time with grown children is like being with the best part of yourself’. And Oh, ’tis true, ’tis true! I revisit that part of me, because of you!

When you were born, I was told ‘when she grows up, she will be your friend’. I never thought how prophetic those words would be. The lines between mother-daughter-friend seem quite blurred at times! Thank you for being my friends, my back-ups, my sternest critics, my greatest strengths (and most humoungous weaknesses!) and understanding companions.

You didn’t ask to be born but you’re here anyway! Thank you for being with me in your journey so far. Because of you I can celebrate this day.
Love, hugs and God Bless!!
