Travel Diaries- 2: Me and Menhirs!

A menhir standing tall in the field.

Being a die hard fan of Asterix, Obelix and the rest of the crazy Gauls, I was eagerly looking forward to visiting a certain place in Brittany famous for ‘Les Alignements de Carnac’. Simply put, these are rows and rows of stones in different shapes and sizes, more than a 1000 in number, that can be seen in a field stretching out for 3 kms.

Nobody knows how they got there, who erected them and why. These rocks date back 5000 years to the Neolithic era. Asterix and Obelix came much later and the stones became known as the menhirs that Obelix used to deliver, with the help of Dogmatix. But the mystery surrounding them still remains: how did the men of the Neolithic era manage to erect these megaliths? And what purpose did they serve??

Obelix may have worked on this one!
Maybe he flung these at the Romans and this is where they landed?
There are rows and rows of them, all across the field.
Big and small, they’ve been standing here for thousands of years.

Since their very existence is a mystery, a number of myths and legends have come up around these stones. They could be the resting place of the Gauls, erected to honour the dead. The big ones for the wealthy and the little ones for the poor. Or they could be pagan soldiers who were petrified for persecuting one of the Saints. Perhaps they’re garrisons of Roman soldiers belonging to Ceasar’s army, turned into stone by a druid. Yes! Getafix did it! They could even be markers for a secret, ancient treasure. We’ll never know. The stones keep their secret and the men who erected them are long gone.

The only sign of life are these sheep that belong to a species particular to the region. They were on the verge of dying out but were rediscovered in 1987.
Since then, this has become their grazing ground. They are protected here and they in turn help preserve the land where the megaliths continue to stand. For the next 5000 years, hopefully?
Standing in stony silence. (Pardon the pun. And the alliteration)
The Roman soldiers were this small??
Like the daffodils, they too stretch out in a never-ending line!
Some have been artfully arranged for tourists to gawk at.
While some have been left aside for crazy tourists to pose with, as if they’re lifting them!
With Katell, my lovely and lively hostess, who took me around the rocks and then let me loose in the souvenir shop nearby; where I promptly went crazy buying Asterix and Obelix related memorabilia!
